In the province of Alberta, unless stated otherwise, used vehicles are sold "as is". Simply put, this means that any post-sale flaws or defects with a used vehicle are the complete responsibility of the buyer. It is therefore, extremely important that buyers do a complete inspection before finalizing an agreement to purchase. We also recommend that used vehicle shoppers check out www.samarins.com. Samarins is the personal website of auto enthusiast Vladamir Samarin of Toronto. The site is an excellent resource and includes an illustrated step-by-step guide for doing an inspection of a used vehicle.
If, after a personal inspection, you're still unsure, its always a good idea to get the opinion of a licensed mechanic. A couple of hundred dollars spent on an inspection by a professional can give peace of mind or could save you from purchasing a vehicle with costly or unsafe defects.
The Alberta Motor Association, offers inspections for members and non-members alike through select AMA approved repair facilities. A buyers inspection includes a 140 point inspection and diagnosis that covers overall engine performance, electrical, exhaust, starting and cooling systems, brakes, steering as well as a test drive.
